An Introduction

Warriors, rulers, and conflicts undeniably shape Punjabi history; and the stories of the region are recorded through their experiences. Punjabi men fought, defended, rebelled, and sacrificed for their land repeatedly; and their influence on modern Punjab is paramount.

But society cannot survive through battle alone.

The Women of Punjab series details the labour of Punjabi women through time - the work that sustained households, preserved resources in scarcity, raised children, upheld faith; and carried communities through war, displacement, and loss.

This series looks at Punjab through a lens of continuity: how villages, culture, and identity survived invasion, partition, and migration. How the women of Punjabi society silently carried the weight of survival, allowing society to endure centuries of instability. It combines individual women, tropes, and cultural memory - creating an evolving archive of women’s roles in Punjabi society.
